How to Optimize Your Ads With No Extra Effort

Most hours a media buyer wastes weekly are on decisions the platform can take by itself. Here are the settings and automations we apply by default on every new account, to save time without losing performance.

1. Smart Performance Campaign (SPC) for accounts with data

If you have 50+ conversions/week, SPC consistently beats manually-optimized campaigns. The algorithm allocates budget across creatives and audiences in real-time. At Mondly we moved 40% of budget to SPC, CPA dropped 18% over the same period.

What it doesn’t do well: new account, under 30 conversions/week, too few creatives (under 5). There you stick with traditional CBO.

2. Automated Rules for pauses and bumps

In TikTok Ads Manager, in Automated Rules, set: pause ad if CPA is over 2x target for 3 consecutive days, increase budget by 20% if ROAS exceeds 2x target for 2 days. Run daily at 9:00.

The effect: you stop opening the account 3 times/day to make pauses. The rules handle 70% of repetitive jobs.

3. Auto-generated captions and smart creative

Turn on Smart Creative on all non-brand campaigns. The platform auto-generates variants (captions, CTA text, framing). In 8 out of 10 cases, the AI variants perform the same or better than the original. It costs zero.

4. Conversion API instead of pixel only

Pixel alone loses 15-25% of conversions in 2026 due to iOS restrictions. Events API / Conversion API reports server-side, brings you to 95%+ accuracy. Setup takes 2 hours. Result: better decisions, faster optimization.

5. Value-based lookalikes over interest targeting

Instead of targeting interests, you upload your customer list with LTV, build a 1-3% lookalike. On e-commerce accounts, it performs 2-3x better than interest targeting. Once uploaded, you don’t intervene weekly.

6. Creative refresh scheduling

Creative fatigue is real: after 7-10 days, CTR drops 20-30%. Set a refresh calendar: 3 new creatives/week minimum, auto-swap anything with hold rate below 30%. At Creative Tim we run 15 active creatives at once, rotating every 10 days.

7. Naming convention + automated UTMs

Clear convention: [Objective]_[Audience]_[Format]_[Variant]. Plus automatic UTMs from the platform. With this, any weekly report takes 10 minutes instead of 2 hours. On big clients (Motorola), this saves 15-20 hours/month.

What you DON’T automate

Creative strategy, hook selection, big budget decisions (+50%), new audiences. Those stay manual. Automation takes routine off your hands, not judgment. Confusing the two is the most common reason automated accounts fail.

Set them up well once, you gain 10+ hours/week. With that money you do research, creative, testing. That’s the real difference between a stagnating account and a scaling one. Periodically check Creative Center for new formats worth testing.
